Our Three Modes

About NCV

Our Three Modes

NCV is independent of every political party, elected official, and funding body. Every time an election happens — local, state or federal — the democracy clock starts again, and we move through three modes.

1

Communication Mode

Following each election, we work and communicate with whoever was elected in each seat — the incumbent — to try to get the best results possible for our community, environment and economy. We collect community wishes, in the form of explicit, desired outcomes, and communicate them directly to elected representatives.

2

Accountability Mode

As the next election approaches at each level, we review each incumbent's performance and assess how well we can hold them accountable for progress on our expressed outcomes. It's a difficult task to assess fairly and objectively — our three main guides are: what they said they'd do, how they actually behaved, and whether real community outcomes were achieved.

If needed, we identify a suitable candidate to run in that electorate with NCV's endorsement and support, entering into a clear agreement covering both parties' contributions and expectations. This phase concludes when fresh elections are called — we publish a leaflet ranking candidates by how closely they align with NCV's values and priorities.

3

Campaign Mode

We examine every candidate's credentials, platform, and alignment with our 10 shared values. If none are sufficiently aligned, we may identify and endorse an Independent candidate who agrees to run their own fundraising and manage their own independent campaign.

When the election formally begins, we publish a ranked list of candidates by degree of alignment with NCV values. Where there's an NCV-endorsed Independent, we supply volunteers and IT support for their campaign. Without an endorsed candidate, Members remain free to support, in their own private capacity, whoever they feel best aligns with NCV's values.
