Community Engagements
How we get out, listen to people where they are, and act on what we hear. And how you can suggest the next one.
An engagement is something NCV does out in the community. Most are about listening: meeting people over a coffee, in a park or at a market stall, and asking what matters to them. Others are about acting on what we hear: a petition, a delegation to an elected representative, or working with another organisation that cares about the same thing.
Every one is proposed, approved by our Board, and looked after by a volunteer. Anyone can suggest one. Suggest an engagement ↓
Meeting people where they are
No speeches and no sales pitch. We turn up, we ask, and we write down what people tell us.

A coffee and a conversation
Small, relaxed catch-ups at a local cafe. Come along, meet your neighbours and tell us what is on your mind. Kitchen Table Conversations work the same way in someone’s home, for a handful of people who know each other.

Bring a chair, bring the kids
BYO barbecues and get-togethers in local parks, at weekends when people have time. It’s the easiest way to meet us, and the easiest way for us to hear from people who would never fill in a form.

Find us at the markets
A marquee, a table and a few volunteers at local markets and community days. Stop by for a chat, or fill in a short Listening Post form about the issues you care about.

Tell us from home
Short surveys about your suburb and the things that affect it, which you can answer online or on paper. Every answer is read, and what we hear goes back to the community in a findings report.
See our listening →Turning what people tell us into action
Listening only matters if something comes of it. These are the ways we take it further.

Petitions
We start petitions on issues our community raises, and support other people’s petitions when they fit our values. We collect signatures at our stalls and online.
Our petitions →
Delegations to elected representatives
Small groups who meet local, state and federal representatives to put what the community has told us in front of them. We meet whoever holds the seat, of any party or none.

Reaching out to allied organisations
Working with other community organisations that care about the same things, so that together we reach more people and nobody does the same work twice.
Groups and allies →Got an idea for an engagement?
A catch-up in your street, a stall at your local market, a question your suburb needs to be asked, a petition, a group we should be talking to. We would love to hear it. You don’t have to run it yourself.
Tell us, in a few lines:
- what kind of engagement it is
- where, and roughly when
- what it’s about, or who we should be listening to
- whether you would like to help
Email the Secretary with your idea
Or write to [email protected]. The Secretary puts every suggestion to the Board, and we will let you know what happens.
