Our Origin Story

Why documenting where we've come from matters just as much as where we're going.

The current community of over 520,000 people inhabiting the Northside area are just the present-day caretakers in a long chain of people going back millennia. From the First Nations inhabitants of the Kabi Kabi, Jinibara, and Turrbal peoples, through the colonial settlement period to modern suburban residents and businesses, we are part of an on-going chain of people who have valued their connection to, and cared for these lands, natural ecosystems and waterways.

We recognise and pay tribute to this sense of belonging, and its associated responsibilities, to past and future generations and to the land itself, its natural features and biodiversity.

One of the first projects NCV is undertaking is to fully and properly research and document the history and evolving story of our community. If you're interested in getting involved, join our association and then join the Communications and Community Relations Working Group. That group will be documenting the Origin Story collaboratively online — we'd love to add early photographs, family stories, and the background history of the various localities that make up our area, from the mountains to the sea.

We're looking for contributors with an interest in any of these eras:

Indigenous occupants, their culture and connection to country
Post-convict pastoralists and early settlement pioneers
The spread of urban subdivisions, town and village development up to the turn of the century
Recent rapid urban growth and the diversification of our resident population
