Common Ground

A first attempt to actually write our shared values down.

Why bother writing this down

It's easy to say a movement shares a common understanding of its values. It's much harder — and much more useful — to actually write them down, in public, where they can be read, argued with, and improved. Most groups never do this. This page is our attempt.

This isn't a claim that every voices group around Australia already agrees on all of this, or embraces it to the same degree. It's a starting draft, offered honestly, not a list anyone is being asked to sign. Nobody has to agree with any of it to be in the directory.

Focusing on what we share

Many communities stress how special and unique their circumstances are. And in the details, that's often true. But underneath the surface, most people in Australia want and cherish much the same things — a fair go, a liveable environment, honest government, a community that looks after its own.

Progress is more likely if energy goes toward those shared ideals, rather than toward the things that divide us — or toward the voices that benefit from keeping us divided.

A starting draft

1. Integrity and accountability

Funding and influence that come with strings attached compromise the ability to represent a community honestly. Transparency about who funds us, and why, is a baseline — not a nice-to-have.

2. Climate and the environment

The evidence on climate and environmental impact is not seriously contested. Communities and their representatives should act on it, not around it.

3. Equality and social justice

People and groups in a community deserve to be treated fairly, regardless of background, circumstance, or how loudly they can advocate for themselves.

4. Community focus and engagement

Decisions should be driven by the documented needs, views and priorities of the community itself — gathered through genuine listening, not assumed from the top down.

5. Independence

Independence from political parties, donors, and vested interests is what makes a community's voice credible in the first place. It's worth protecting deliberately, not just claiming.

Any group is free to add its own values on top of these, to reflect local priorities and circumstances — this draft is a floor to build on, not a ceiling. If you think we've got something wrong, or missing, we'd genuinely like to hear it through our contact form.
