Full membership of Northside Community Voices is available to any adult (16 or over) resident of our area, which includes the City of Moreton Bay and the entirety of any State electorates or Federal Divisions that lie mainly within that Local Government Area. Under 16’s or residents living outside our area who wish to stay in touch with our activities are welcome to join as an ‘Interested Party’. People wishing to join must agree to abide by our NCV Code of Conduct and the website Terms of Service.
The more than 520,000 people who now inhabit the Northside area are just the most recent caretakers in a long chain of people going back millennia. Following many thousands of years of sole habitation by the First Nations Kabi Kabi, Jinibara and Turrbal peoples, the colonial settlement of the Northside area began in the late 1840s, after Brisbane ceased to be used as a penal colony. We urban and rural residents in the Northside Community Voices are part of an unbroken chain of people who have valued their connection to and cared for the natural ecosystems that include the land, waterways and the sea.
We recognise and value this sense of belonging and its associated responsibilities and pay tribute to past and future generations and to the land itself, its natural features and biodiversity.
Community Voices
Northside Community Voices (NCV) is a non-partisan organisation established so all residents of our area / our community can become actively involved (i.e. have a “Voice”) in the democratic processes and decision-making affecting their physical and natural environment and quality of life and that of future generations living in the area. We want to support Members working to achieve positive and sustainable social, economic, environmental and governance changes for the benefit of our community.
What is the “Northside Area”?
We decided to define the Northside area as the whole of the City of Moreton Bay and the entire state and federal seats that fit approximately within its boundaries. With a population of over 520,000, and 11 State and 3 Federal seats, our Northside area has about the same population and representation as the State of Tasmania (minus their Upper State house and 12 Senators!).
How do we function?
Our philosophy on participatory community democracy is we have to work with out elected representatives, at all levels, while they are in office, evaluate their performance and the options presented by all alternative candidates at upcoming elections and support those candidates whose values and alignment with our community’s desired outcomes offer the most promise for achieving the social, environmental, economic and governance changes we want to see occur.
What do we mean by “Voices”?
Almost every elected representative will say that their job is to represent all the voters of their electorate and do their best to deliver outcomes that meet their needs and wishes. Our main aim is to find out what those needs and wishes are and communicate them in explicit terms to those representatives. We aim to be inclusive and constructive in collecting that information, finding common ground providing independent, two-way communication between the community and their elected representatives.
