Cost of Living and Taxation Reform
What is a Backgrounder? This is background information, not policy — a shared, evidence-based starting point for Voices Groups nationally. NCV does not develop or endorse policy positions. Turning this background into an actual policy platform is the responsibility of the Independent candidates NCV may endorse, as set out in each candidate's Endorsement Agreement.
Background
Household budgets have come under sustained pressure from grocery, energy, insurance and housing costs rising faster than incomes for many Australians. Alongside this, the fairness and complexity of the tax system — including bracket creep, GST, and how different income sources are taxed — is a recurring topic raised by communities wanting a system that feels equitable.
This is an illustrative Backgrounder, created to demonstrate the Backgrounder Library's structure — it is not yet based on compiled source research.
Key themes raised by communities
Grocery and essential goods price competition and supermarket market power
Bracket creep and whether tax thresholds keep pace with wages
Fairness between wage income, investment income, and superannuation tax treatment
Insurance affordability, particularly in areas exposed to extreme weather
