Political Donations and Lobbying Reform
What is a Backgrounder? This is background information, not policy — a shared, evidence-based starting point for Voices Groups nationally. NCV does not develop or endorse policy positions. Turning this background into an actual policy platform is the responsibility of the Independent candidates NCV may endorse, as set out in each candidate's Endorsement Agreement.
Background
The transparency and scale of political donations, and the access that professional lobbyists have to decision-makers, is a widely shared concern among Voices Groups — forming much of the original motivation behind the community independent movement. Communities consistently ask for donation disclosure that is timely and genuinely transparent, real-time rather than delayed by months.
This is an illustrative Backgrounder, created to demonstrate the Backgrounder Library's structure — it is not yet based on compiled source research.
Key themes raised by communities
Real-time versus delayed donation disclosure
Donation caps and spending caps at election time
Transparency of lobbyist access to Ministers and decision-makers
“Revolving door” movement between political staff, regulators and industry
