The democracy clock re-starts after each election
NCV is a grass-roots community organisation continuously campaigning to make democracy work better for our community. Between elections we are primarily engaged with:
- finding out what issues and priorities people in our Northside area care about;
- advocating for informed debate and decision-making;
- recognising and promoting the value of ideas and policies aligned with our shared values; and
- raising public awareness of the need for politicians to govern in the best interests of community well-being and environmental sustainability.Â
Before you vote
Elections only happen every four years or so. Most people switch off between elections. There are powerful vested interests at play trying to keep ordinary people switched off and tuned out. Our aim at NCV is to empower our community to prepare to engage in the democratic process with a clear-eyed viw about where their best interest lie.
Sue Barrett, former campaign manager for Zoe Daniels in the Melbourne electorate of Goldstein, writes: “Every election campaign is full of promises. Housing. Cost of living. Better hospitals. Safer streets. A stronger economy. You have heard all of them. You will hear them again.
Too many of them are not policies. They are slogans. And some are something more deliberate – propaganda. Statements designed not to inform you but to produce a feeling. To make you afraid, or angry, or reassured, without giving you anything specific enough to hold anyone to account.” (suebarrett.substack.com)
