Federal government

Next federal government election

Unlike the other levels of government, the timing of federal government elections is not prescribed by legisaltion. Legally, the Governor-General dissolves the House of Representatives and issues the writs for an election. However, the timing of federal elections is a matter for the Prime Minister, within some legislative and constitutional constraints.

A next federal election is scheduled to be held no later than 2028 to elect members of the House of Representatives and half of the Senate to the 49th Parliament of Australia. There is no legal requirement for Senate and House of Representatives elections to be held on the same day. However, practical, logistical and financial reasons have meant the two have been held together since 1970. Therefore the earliest date for a federal election for both houses is 7 August 2027 and the latest date is 20 May 2028.

Candidate search - federal

The Constitution of Australia, which took effect on January 1, 1901, created a federal system that delegated specific legislative and executive powers to the new Commonwealth government, while the colonies (which became States) retained the rest.  Even though the Moreton Bay community forms only a small (but rapidly growing) part of the Australian population, we are trying to ensure that our federal representatives recognise that their prime responsibility is to serve the interests of their community, rather than those of political parties, or business, union or industry interests.

Right now, before the next federal government elections, your voice matters. You have the chance to nominate someone you know – or to put your own name forward – as an independent candidate who genuinely reflects the values and priorities of people of your local area.
By standing as an independent for the next Council elections in 2028, a candidate commits to:

• Prioritise the community over outside interests and party politics
• Listen to your neighbours and local residents and act on what matters to the community
• Combat mis- and dis-information and champion evidence-based solutions to the issues we collectively care about
• Hold true to community values of fairness, transparency, integrity and equality.

We’re seeking a person who can unite and represent our community with courage, integrity and dedication. Click on this link to find out more about the  candidate attributes we are looking for. If you know someone who holds these qualities and would be a positive, community-focused independent candidate for any of the Council Divisions listed below or if that person is you, we want to hear from you.
